The Bad Guy

With the Thanksgiving Holiday fast approaching, I thought it would be a good time to offer some fitness specific information and advice on F-A-T.  Be lucky you're reading this instead of training with me today because I worked my FitLab clients biceps and triceps soooo hard today...so that EVERY single time they raised their fork to their mouth on Thanksgiving, they would think of me and be reminded of their goals.  ;-)  You're welcome very much, Client.

Back in the day, fat was just thought of as a spare tire that sits in inconvenient places on your body.  Well, to science anyway.  I still think of it as that inconvenient "issue" that many of us have somewhere unattractive.  As science has come to understand the "role of fat" in the body more, it realized that "fat" actually produces signals related to the metabolism.  I know, I know...right now you are probably thinking blah-dy, blah-dy, BLAH!  But keep reading...I promise, this is information you should know.

Did you know that Fat isn't just flub-a-dub?  It actually secretes hormones that send extremely important signals to the brain.

So let's talk about these signals for a second.  Maybe I can help you understand some important things about weight loss, maintenance, and explain why you binge eat sometimes.  I kind of think of them as your proverbial "Devil" and "Angel" on your shoulder.  Today let's start with the Bad Guy.

Leptin - aka the "Devil" or the "Bad Guy" is not allll bad but I'm not a fan of this hormone that lives in your fat cells.  Imagine him as a little cartoon that lives where the fat lives.  When he starts seeing the fat calls decrease in size, he yells out a signal to the Brain.

"Hey Brain, we're getting low on storage down here!"

The Brain responds, "Ok, Leptin, got your signal loud and clear..." and then the Brain sends a message to the body to eat more.

Here's a couple ways that you can see this happen...

You know that point where you start feeling skinny and noticing changes in the body?  That point where the jeans fit and you start feeling positive about yourself...and then out of nowhere you just want to eat and eat and eat?  Well, you can thank Leptin for that.  He thinks he is helping you...and in a crisis, it's good to have him around.  But for weight loss, not so much.  To severely over-simplify it, it is one of the main reasons that those last 5-10 pounds are the hardest to lose.

Our bodies weren't created to lose weight...they were created to maintain Life.  So if you overeat and gain weight, that is one reason why it is ten times as hard to lose it as it was to gain it.  Your body has "defense mechanisms" in place to "save" you.  Conversely, if Leptin is sitting in his "spot" in your fat and starts saying, "Hey Brain, it's getting full in here..." the Brain responds by slowing production.

Part of, ok well, MOST of our problem is our environment.  The more technologically savvy we get, the fatter we get.  Why walk to the next room to ask someone a question when you can just text message or IM them, right?  Wrong.  We are getting more fat because life has almost gotten too convenient!

Here's another reason that Leptin is the Devil. When you consume fat and fructose (fruit sugar), Leptin gets "sleepy" and takes a nap. Leptin isn't doing his job to signal to the brain what it should:

"Hey Brain, I'm full down here!"

Lower Leptin levels lead to overeating and weight gain because of overeating.  This is one reason High FRUCTOSE Corn Syrup is so bad.  If it blocks Leptin production in your Brain, you don't realize you're full until you're WAY too full.  One of the first things I tell my new clients is to cut out all foods with High Fructose Corn Syrup in the first five ingredients.  Go through your refrigerator and check out your condiments...you'll be shocked how many of those suckers have HFCS as one of the main ingredients.

Let's see, have I said it enough?  High Fructose Corn Syrup is not your friend...no matter what those cheesy commercials tell you.  "It's just corn."  Yea, chemically altered corn!

Alright, you get the picture.  Tonight, your "homework" project - if you so choose to participate - is to go through your cabinets and fridge and do a self-diagnosis.  How many of the foods you eat have HFCS in the first five ingredients?  Big food companies will love you if you keep eating their foods with HFCS so that you'll consume more and spend more money, I promise...your body (long term), however, won't.

Tomorrow...the Good Guy.

Huh. That makes a lot of sense. Tricky bugger, that Leptin. I confess, I pulled out my road trip Skittles and got all excited that hfcs wasn't in the ingredients list...and then I figured that since some form of sugar or oil was the first 4 ingredients, I shouldn't be especially pleased with my snack choice :)

I LOVE your fitness advice...keep it coming!!

Agree. And sugar and the like (HFCS being the worst) make your body want to store fat instead of burning it, because it triggers an insulin response. I want to say this carefully, but fat does not necessarily make you fat. Your body needs fat to survive (you can obviously overdo it, and fake (trans) fats are never okay). It's when you take in excess sugars that the body's insulin response triggers hormonal reactions that cause fat storage, among other things like not being satiated.

I was watching Sister Wives the other day (yep, I watch silly TLC reality shows) and the wives are working out to try to lose weight, which is awesome. But, they weren't happy with their results and I never once heard their trainer mention diet. Maybe he has, but I didn't see any evidence of that. Nutrition is at least 80% of fitness, in my personal and humble opinion. When I explain to people why I choose not to consume much sugar and grains, but I will eat higher fat foods that many people are afraid of (nuts, avocados, olives, coconut, etc... all within reason, of course), I explain it to them this way... have you ever met a Type II Diabetic that was not overweight? What is diabetes? Very simply, sugar --> Messed up insulin response --> obesity.

Sorry that was a novel all to say kudos for sharing this. It's amazing how we've come to accept the "Standard American Diet" yet disease and obesity rates are higher than ever but people don't always accept dietary change as a solution.

Thanks for the info! Makes lots of sense. As someone who has never dieted, age and a slower metabolism has been something difficult for me to adjust to. I spoke to a trainer and she is an Advocare (?) rep and was all gung ho getting me on the supplements for a month before I start worrying about working out. I don't know how I feel about that. I told her, "I want my back side to look less like a pancake and more like a cinnabon". I'm 5'7" and weigh in the 134 range (I refuse to buy scales!) so toning is my main issue. I just am worried about adding these supplements in. Thoughts?

Great information, thanks! What about the role of "good fats"? I always see things like almonds and olives recommended by nutritionists but am not recalling exactly why that is...

I loved this! I'm a senior right now going to be a dietitian. It's so true. People don't understand how one little change the the molucle can make a huge change in the synthesis in your body. Trans fats just have extra hydrogens! the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats are JUST double bonds! It sounds simple but your body reacts way different :) thanks for sharing your knowledge girlfriend! Oh they have also done some studies to blame leptin for obesity. I don't know enough to decide if it's 100% credible, but some people don't produce leptin at all and overeat like crazy! so tough!

Thank you for this, but got a question. What do you use for things like jelly or cholocate syrup b/c that's the only way I can get my kid to drink milk?

Good to know! Thanks for sharing. =)

Will you talk about insulin production and how it relates to this whole weight loss thing, too? I'm trying to understand it since I have PCOS, but I don't always get it.

Great info! We follow Westin Price stuff where it's all about eating natural foods and GOOD fats! We don't eat anything with high fructose corn syrup but someone will go on and on about these "100 calorie" cookies or whatever and I'm always thinking "please just look at what they're made of before you eat them!" but I hate sounding pushy or know-it-all like either, because I certainly don't know it all!! Also a commenter above asked about chocolate syrup, and Whole Foods makes a "natural" choc syrup (I have no clue how chocolate syrup can be natural, but it's prob as natural as possible!) and it doesn't have any high fructose corn syrup or any bad oils and stuff. Just sugar. I'm sure other places carry stuff like that too. It's just about looking and finding brands you like ... probably much like your gluten stuff! Thanks for sharing -- I love reading about this stuff!

This is my problem EXACTLY...these last 10-15 lbs are KILLER to get off...and I've done EXACTLY the same thing...it's like I CAN NOT get enough food for about 1 1/2 weeks and then it goes away and I "refocus"...I'm super scared to have that feeling of needing to eat so much. I always blamed it on my period. Didn't even think about fat hormones. And NORMALLY...if I get "snack-ish" - broccoli or something healthy curbs that, but not when it's in that freak-ish time period where all I want is chocolate.

Thanks for sharing, can't wait to hear the good guy!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this Amy!! It's one thing to hear "HFCS is bad" but it's another to actually have it broken down into reasons why it's bad! I love your fitness and nutrition advice, please keep it coming!

Thank you so much. This makes a lot of sense. I keep getting to a certain weight and then it seems to all fall apart. I start eating crazy and stop exercising I always feel like I am self sabotaging but maybe this has more to do with it.
